Library Augustinian Monastery – Architecture historique modernisée avec les panneaux composites Reynobond Zinc
The Weimar-based architects Junk & Reich rose to the challenge of dressing historic architecture in modern garbs when they restored the library of the Augustine Monastery in Erfurt. What is striking about the building is the combination of traditional materials, such as shell limestone for the walls and natural-finish zinc for the roof with the steel-glass structure for the windows.
The apparently traditional zinc roof however conceals an innovation: the new Reynobond composite panel. Working in cooperation with VMZINC, in its Reynobond Zinc solution Alcoa Architectural Products has produced a lightweight but robust composite panel of completely uniform and level design, which can be worked into any shape. The panel consists of two pre-weathered zinc sheets surrounding a fire-retardant core (FR).
Under the influence of the ambient air, the patina evolves naturally to form a zinc carbonate patina. This protects the surface, making scratches disappear. The building is given an individual and imposing character, together with a natural and exclusive
aura all of its own.
