The East Building’s design is inspired by the naturally weathered monolithic rocks that occur in the Australian landscape. The reddish coloured elZinc Rojo/Red panels pay homage to the Australian red earth. As Woods Bagot Principal Stuart Uren explained zinc proved to be the perfect cladding material for the building. “It is long lasting and malleable and is able to follow the curved, folded shapes of the building; zinc is a plentiful resource, it is non-toxic and is 100% recyclable,” he said.
